Floating Utopias. Balloons, Bubbles, Barricades
27 April – 24 June 2018
Exhibition, Symposium, Workshops
Opening: 26 April 2018, 19h
Since the first hot-air balloon was launched in 1783, inflatable objects have lent wings to artistic visions and social utopias. The view from above opens up new perspectives: In floating labs, researchers survey the world. Inflatable spectacles celebrate both capitalism and communism. Since the end of the 1960s, the playful possibilities of the pneumatic medium have inspired nomadic architecture, artistic actions and civil disobedience. The exhibition juxtaposes works by contemporary artists with historical films and documents. In workshops, pupils can test utopian models in everyday life. Actions in public space assess the political potential of inflatable objects.
