The title most often to be found used in contemporary art since 1970 is UNTITLED (OHNE TITEL). A title which proclaims its own absence is strangely paradoxical. At first glance it appears banal, arbitrary, harmless. Yet in terms of society, the market economy and politics its implications are truly explosive. Its subversive potential only becomes apparent upon closer examination. UNTITLED is not the same as Untitled. The title of a work of art marks an important interface between private and public space, between the production of art and its publication, sale and reflection. A difference has to be made between works accidently left untitled, those where the omission was intentional and works deliberately named UNTITLED. In the UNTITLED (OHNE TITEL) exhibition the RealismusStudio has chosen to concentrate above all on works which focus on this topic and introduce an additional meta-level together with a critical, subtle form of discourse. The focus is on the framework conditions and marginal phenomena of art production and the art market, on the work-title-paratext-context relationship as well as on the subversion of the void and the political in the apparently unutterable.
