This research project examines the ways social upheavals were dealt with during the transformations following German reunification in 1990, with a central focus on the aesthetics that took shape within this context. In East Germany, various artistic forms of critical engagement with social realities were developed. The project will ask whether and how they were then applied to the new situation. Why do they still lack visibility? Which practices can be rediscovered and pursued today?
