How, in light of current discourse, might we read the institutional and activist knowledge and expertise garnered throughout the fifty-year history of the nGbK (formerly NGBK)? And how might this at times ambivalent resource be mobilized for the present era? This exhibition and discourse program endeavor to plot potential gaps in the nGbK’s own memory and self-image.
For the exhibition, Özlem Altın, Alice Creischer/Andreas Siekmann, and Aykan Safoğlu have been invited to sift the evidence in the nGbK archive. In their projects they will examine inclusionary and exclusionary instances in the history of the nGbK, and propose alternative readings of them.
In the discourse program, past and present activists from the academic, scientific or cultural realms will come together to investigate the nGbK’s claim to sociocultural and political relevance. In reference to specific projects they will debate political alliances and solidarity in the cultural sector, functionalization, desire, and the relationship of art to labor. In the process, they will jointly formulate guidelines for curatorial practice.
