»The Whale and the Raven« by Mirjam Leuze

(DE/CA 2019, 101 min, OV with German subtitles),
followed by a talk with Stephan Bernardes (assistant director)

Are empathy and social intelligence qualities of whales? Janie Wray and Hermann Meuter firmly believe they are. The two whale researchers spent the last 15 years off the northwest coast of Canada, documenting the behaviour of the orca and humpbacked whales. A mere 70 miles from their research stations lies the small coastal town of Kitimat. A gigantic export terminal for liquid gas (LNG) is scheduled for construction there. The Gitga’at First Nation, the owners of the land, campaigned successfully against the transport of crude oil through their fjord yet then agreed to the gas project – and are now contractually obliged to refrain from critical comment on the future tanker traffic. »The Whale and the Raven« offers profound insights into a unique natural realm, into Janie’s and Hermann’s impassioned work with the whales, and the complex clash of interests engendered by environmental concerns and hopes for economic recovery.

The film program is curated by Florian Wüst.
