Glossary of Urban Praxis. Towards a Manifesto

As a continuation of the »SITUATION BERLIN #1« conference held in May by the Initiative Urbane Praxis, a manifesto of urban praxis will be developed at the end of November as part of »SITUATION BERLIN #2: Towards a Manifesto of Urban Praxis«: Who makes the city and with which cultures and practices? How can the right to the city be formulated without dogmatism?

The bilingual glossary Urban Praxis: Towards a Manifesto, edited by Jochen Becker (curator, critic, metroZones/station of urban cultures), Anna Schäffler (art historian, CoCooN), Simon Sheikh (art historian, Programme Director of Curating at Goldsmiths, University of London) and the nGbK Berlin, now provides the basis for work on a manifesto of Urban Praxis and its future perspectives.

The aim is to refine our understanding of Urban Praxis through the multiplicity of people involved and, at the same time, to work out its central criteria and qualities. The potentials of their artistic, creative, and activist methods are to be inscribed in the urban discourse: What are these modes of action and how exactly do they relate to each other? In terms of a self-critical, post-disciplinary approach, what can be learned from the practices and standards of the other fields?

Various actors from the field of Urban Praxis introduce its key terms and critically engage with current concepts. The entries will be made available online along with additional concepts and a shadow glossary. The glossary entries reveal the cross-genre and transdisciplinary dimension of Urban Praxis. The Initiative Urbane Praxis is based on three main directions: artistic and curatorial practices, urbanist and planning-based and design and construction-based practices, and socio-cultural and activist practices.

The jointly compiled glossary, with its approximately 30 printed contributions and a shadow index, identifies necessary urban strategies that lead to meaningful Urban Praxis: How can the city implement new forms of coexistence that draw on the hidden histories and fragments of the past, address current problems, and orient themselves towards the future? How can approaches to this be guided and consolidated in structural and institutional channels without becoming fossilised?

The glossary not only provides a vocabulary of current urban life and highlights the need for urban and artistic action, but also shows what Urban Praxis in its diversity can contribute to the city today and in the future. Through the concrete formulation of goals, means, ideas, and ideals, the glossary provides ready-to-use concepts and contributes to the elaboration of a first collective manifesto of urban practice.
