If forced disappearance gained an endemic status in Latin America – how may artistic responses look like, coming from the very places of loss? The workshop focuses on the different ways that violent disappearances relate to performance art in Latin America. The absentees seem to drive performances that challenge hegemonic narratives. Considering works by Lukas Avendaño and Regina José Galindo, we will tackle the relation between violence and spirituality within performance and look at forms of communication beyond language. We will also discuss the work of Tania Bruguera who has developed an independent political network and vocabulary in Cuba. In 2021, the Cuban government arrested hundreds of protesters that were then identified on social media as forcibly disappeared by the state. Considering that this activism is deployed online, how is a political future envisioned?

In the evening the lecture by Marivi Véliz will take place. More information here.
