Welcome: Eylem Sengezer, Moderation: Barış Seyitvan
In his thesis titled "Migration and Refugeeism in the Context of Contemporary Art" (2017) Barış Seyitvan focuses on death, life and trauma, turning towards a narrative of artists, productions and identities. In this context, Seyitvan is trying to create a map of Kurdish artists living in Germany and Austria. As part of his fellowship, Seyitvan met with many artists and recorded their practices.
Barış Seyitvan will talk with five Kurdish artists, who are living and producing in Berlin: Havin Al-Sindy, Soosan Azizi, Leyla Toprak, Soran Ahmed, and Wirya Budaghi. Within this format, which shall serve as a continuation of Seyitvan's project, the Kurdish artists will elaborate on why they immigrated to Europe, how they continued their artistic work in Berlin, how their works changed as a result of relocation, and whether the artists were exposed to different forms of pressure in the places they left behind.
Recently, the conflicts surrounding the protests for the Kurdish woman Jina Mahsa Amini, who was killed by Iranian police about two months ago, have had repercussions for both civilians and artists. Thus, the speakers will also talk about how they were affected by this and propose strategies to address the issue in future.
