Discussion with the editors and artists featured in the anthology Chile International II. Skizzen des Südens – Landkarten von morgen on societal upheaval, historical engagement, and artistic positioning
With excepts from the film Humo sobre los humedales (2019–21, Spanish with English subtitles) by Barbara Marcel
The reckless plundering and privatization of natural resources have made a tangible impact on Chilean society and on the country’s landscapes. Today, fifty years after the military coup against the government of Salvador Allende, hopes for a more just, many-voiced society are mixed with forceful calls for a move away from the neoliberal model, one legacy of the Pinochet dictatorship.
“Perhaps more than ever before, it is a matter of taking sustained responsibility for collective processes.” Alejandra Rojas del Canto, Asamblea textil del Elqui
In 2019, large-scale civil society protests triggered a process of transformation in Chile, with figures from the worlds of art and culture playing an active part in the resulting debates around social participation, feminism, and climate justice.
In German and Spanish, the anthology presents a selection of artists and collectives, as well as current debates from various regions of Chile and from neighboring Argentina, Bolivia, and Brazil.
