Zusammenleben (Living Together)
Thomas Fürhapter
AT 2022, 90 mins, OV with German subtitles

Followed by a conversation with Mekonnen Shiferaw (Babel e.V.)

How do migrants view Vienna and Austria? Which types of information and which “values” arediscussed in integration courses, and which are ignored? In Zusammenleben (Living Together), Thomas Fürhapter shows how both legal and highly personal matters are addressed in these courses. Between cultural mediation and discussion group, the result is a complex document of diversity, with all of the attendant challenges and potential sources of irritation.

“There was once a place in Vienna where people could study and learn how to live together. As an EU-funded municipal project, modules were developed to make it easier for refugees – but also newcomers in general – to find their way around the city: self-determined everyday life with the help of refugee expertise. Now that the EU funding has run out, what remains is a documentary by Thomas Fürhapter who, with Judith Benedikt and Klemens Koscher steadying the camera, explores the course program, listens to people working out possible solutions, and, above all, looks at faces with real devotion.” (Regina Schlagnitweit)
