Public consultation

2021 Type: Glossary

Public consultation is a regulatory process by which the public’s input on matters affecting them is sought. Its main goals are in improving the efficiency, transparency and public involvement in large-scale projects or laws and policies. In the UK consultation is an important part of any public art commission and building project. It has the potential to create a space where designers, artists and architects can fully engage in a collaborative way with the individuals, publics and community groups who will be impacted by the project. If used strategically consultation can offer a creative moment where dweller control becomes tangible and space can be actively produced rather than passively consumed by its ultimate users.
