Spielclub. Kinder Stadt Geld
Out now: Berliner Hefte zu Geschichte und Gegenwart der Stadt #10
From 1969 to 1972, the Spielumwelt working group existed in the nGbK. It wanted to develop a form of artistic practice critical of capitalism for and with working class children. For several months, artists and children set up a play club with a play city in Kulmer Straße 20a in Schöneberg, Berlin.
This practice was reformulated in winter 2019/20 as Spielclub Oranienstraße 25 at the nGbK in Kreuzberg, Berlin. School classes spent play days here on urban development issues, such as rent policy and questions of participation. The publication describes an artistic-educational history of ideas, reflects on the relationship between children and artists, play and reality, and shows the differences between the projects realised 50 years apart.
