Our knowledge of the processes of modernity and modernisation is almost inconceivable without the technologies of photography. Framed by the concept „We see what we know“, Sabine Bitter & Helmut Weber will discuss the role of the photographic image in contemporary visual art and artistic research with the curator and critic Raimar Stange and with the artists Heidrun Holzfeind and Karina Nimmerfall.

Why do we always need additional references or formats of knowledge before we recognise the significance of the medium of photography? Using examples from their various working methods, the practitioners will talk about relationships between picture, text and other forms of knowledge. In doing so, they will discuss methods and forms of representation that relate to the power of images and our ability to read them and act on them. They will also take a critical look at the effects of being overwhelmed or saturated by photographs and ask - how do pictures become utilised?
