Die Berliner S-Bahn
Gesellschaftsgeschichte eines industriellen Verkehrsmittels
Berlin’s urban/suburban railway, the S-Bahn. A social history of an industrial mode of transport
This “social history of an industrial mode of transport,” produced in cooperation with Berlin’s Museum Outreach Office, the Museum for Transport and Technology, and Künstlerhaus Bethanien, was published by Verlag Ästhetik und Kommunikation. The 382-page book is divided into chapters on “History of the City,” “Buildings & Constructions,” “Life with the S-Bahn,” “Art & Perceptions of the City,” “Technology & Operation,” and “The Future of the S-Bahn.” Rare archive materials and painstaking research help to present a distinctive social history of Berlin, exploring issues such as processes of urbanization during industrialization, the segregation of living and working quarters, the emergence of urbanity, the mobilization of urban life, and the impact on town planning and development. Detailed architectural analyses of stations and operational buildings show the evolution of the industrial design that still characterizes the S-Bahn today.
