Functions of fine art in our society. Catalogue for the Hamburg exhibition
With this project, the basic research working group set out to explore the links between the aesthetic and society. Fine art, the group argued, should not be viewed in isolation, set apart from prevailing economic conditions and the ideology of the capitalist system, of which it is part. Art should play an applied, communicative role, using aesthetic means to highlight the functional constellations of social phenomena. In the summer of 1971, the exhibition toured from Berlin to Hamburg, where it was shown in reduced and modified form. The show was prepared by students from the University of Fina Arts, Hamburg (HfbK ) and Intergalerie. The booklet published to accompany the exhibition contains, among others, essays by Wolfgang Fritz Haug, Chup Friemert, Christian Deutschmann, and Silvia Kluge.
