Geissler/Sann: volatile smile

This ring-bound book of postcards was published to accompany the exhibition of the same name hosted by RealismusStudio at the nGbK. Over an extended period of time, Beate Geissler and Oliver Sann have been exploring the simulation of reality in connection with violence and power structures, be it in computer or children’s games, in music videos, or during military maneuvers. As well as the photograph of a young man to which the show’s name refers, taken at the moment of killing in the virtual space of an ego-shooter game, the postcards feature motifs from the realms of commerce and finance, offices of trading companies in Chicago, or statements on the real-estate crisis—all topics far removed from the usual “wish you were here” vacation greetings and from the preservation of memories of good times. With essays by Brian Holmes and Frank Wagner.
