Hans Haacke: The range and variety of the Ludwig brigade
Although Hans Haacke took part in Harald Szeemann’s pioneering exhibition When Attitudes become Form in 1969 and the documenta in 1972 and 1982, his work long remained largely unknown in Germany. This prompted the nGbK and Kunsthalle Bern to cooperate on a large project with the artist. In 1984, Künstlerhaus Bethanien hosted Haacke’s exhibition Nach allen Regeln der Kunst with works from the years 1969 through 1984. As a project for Berlin, Haacke developed the installation Weite und Vielfalt der Brigade Ludwig, and this booklet with materials on the work’s creation and reception was produced by the RealismusStudio working group as a supplement to the show’s main catalogue. The work addresses the contradictions between private patronage and the responsibility of state art institutions, as well as the economic interests of companies which, as wealthy sponsors, are increasingly trying to exert an influence on the production and distribution of art. Includes a text by the artist and various press responses to his installation.
