Hermann Stamm: The Lesson
Beatrice Stammer and Frank Wagner begin their foreword with a quotation from Max Frisch: “Today, a call for hope is a call to resist.” Hermann Stamm (born 1953), the subject of this RealismusStudio exhibition, is an artist who works as a radical realist. His material consists of photographs and found objects, scraps of conversation and unearthed notes; his image-text stories deal with marginalized areas of society like psychiatry, death, and prison. As the foreword puts it, “his pictures and texts are put together in such a way that the meaning of the text is distorted and heightened to the point of sarcasm by the confrontation with photographs on entirely different themes.” The catalogue includes images from Stamm’s series Das Album (The Album), Die Schlafzimmer (The Bedrooms), and Das Experiment.
