The exhibition for which this catalogue was produced was shown at Frankfurter Kunstverein and at Württembergischer Kunstverein in Stuttgart before travelling to the nGbK in 1974. Although Käthe Kollwitz (1867–1945) was already a well-known artist in Germany at the time, the travelling exhibitions working group wanted to reconsolidate her position in historical and political terms. Developed by Frankfurter Kunstverein in cooperation with students from Frankfurt University, the exhibition not only showed Kollwitz’s work, but also highlighted the social factors that shaped it in the form of displays and texts. This ensured that the artist’s own claim to political impact and partisanship was not lost—as it had been in many previous shows of her work. The catalogue associates Kollwitz with political debates by including pamphlets and posters. Her political commitments, including support for the International Trade Union Confederation and signing protest declarations, is also reflected in the biography included in the catalogue.
