Mayakovsky – 20 years of work
This extensive catalogue, published by the nGbK in 1978 in cooperation with Künstlerhaus Bethanien, accompanied an exhibition on Vladimir Mayakovsky (1893–1930) entitled 20 Jahre Arbeit. Printed in black and red, it contains materials compiled by the artist himself in 1930, photographs, posters, and poems from the revolutionary years. A detailed overview showcases the Soviet poet’s versatility: Mayakovsky’s oeuvre ranges from advertising for chocolates, perfume, and rubber boots through shop window designs, film scripts, theater plays, futurist almanacs, and even a circus performance. He also worked on various magazines and newspapers. Mayakovsky’s books and collections of poems were designed and illustrated by El Lissitzky, Alexander Rodchenko, and other constructivist artists. The catalogue celebrates Mayakovsky as a “poet agitator,” a “man of verse at every stage of the art of writing,” a “man who seeks to actively take part in building a socialist society.”
