Rationalization 1984
This major exhibition by Staatliche Kunsthalle Berlin in cooperation with the nGbK dealt with the “third industrial revolution.” In his foreword, Dieter Ruckhaberle, then director of the Kunsthalle, refers to George Orwell’s 1984 and themes including fear of an overly powerful state and the lack of prospects. The focus is on problems caused by technological progress: unemployment, overproduction, destabilization of labor unions. The working group wished to achieve social progress, “so that the sun shines on both sides of the hedge.” The catalogue contains an index of the exhibition and several illustrations, but it is mainly a reader with essays, statistics, graphics, and documentary photographs that seeks to counter the “irrationalisms” of everyday life with well-founded material for discussion.
