Viewing and reading habits of children with regard to comics
In August 1971, Hans Giffhorn and the work and education working group presented this sociological study of the viewing and reading habits of children with regard to comics, taking as its point of departure an American study from 1923/24 that rated reading comics as the “number one distraction” for children. In West Germany, little attention was paid to comics as a cultural phenomenon. Using the examples of Superman, Mickey Mouse, and Fix und Foxi, the author asks why children read which comics and how often. The focus is on the economic background of comics, the values they communicate, and potential use in schools.
