THE SWAN SONG
An Operetta in Four Acts
“We’ll hang it all,
We’ll hang it fast,
As long as it’s not made to last!
We aren’t here to strike it rich,
We’re here for good,
We’ll never quit!”
- From Patience and Diana’s duet “We’ll never quit”, Act three
The Swan Song – an Operetta in four acts has been in continuous production by a group of queer obstinate creators and a crowd of passionate performers. It was brought on stage scene by scene and year by year in various venues throughout Berlin.
In the 10th year of working, the musical interpretations and performative gesticulations of all four acts were presented at nGbK. The Swan Song is the story of two families – the bar and the gallery – their struggle to survive great social changes resulting from gentrification and economic constraints that challenge their connection with their community and their solidarity as a collective. The score follows the classical Operetta structure while integrating elements of pop music, sound installation and improvised music
