Theory and practice of democratic cultural work

This extensive reader produced by the working group of the same name sought to satisfy the need for a theory of cultural practice. In their foreword, the group’s members write: “Prior to the creation of a broad-based democratic culture, cultural producers must recognize the interests of those who create value within our society, experiencing them via practical cooperation.” The aim was a new understanding of art and society that would make an impact in the important field of art education. As well as several essays on themes including “Societal conditions for the production of ideology in late capitalism” and “Democratic cultural work,” the publication includes elaborately designed foldout panels in color depicting “the accumulation process of capital” and “capitalism today.”
