Between 1991 and 2008, the nGbK organized displays of contemporary art at Alexanderplatz subway station, until this program was replaced by the advertising concept of “station branding.” The U10 art competition for which this catalog was produced can be viewed as a follow-on project. Inspired by the U10, a “phantom line” that was partly built but never put into service, it looked at the past, present, and future of the subway network. The aim was to study the visible and invisible traces of the Berlin underground and its role in the identity of the city and its inhabitants. The catalog sought to explore the experimental character and the specifics of this three-year nGbK project, bringing together essays on the conception and realization of the competition, discussing artistic strategies of participation, and making links to art-theoretical debates around art in public space. As well as historical aspects and potential future perspectives, the publication also documents the projects that were commissioned and realized.
