This extensive nGbK publication produced in cooperation with the Gesellschaft zur Rettung der Stadtgeschichte is the main catalogue for the exhibition of the same name with the subtitle “The Tiergartenviertel district in Berlin – a changing urban landscape.” The historical development of the area is traced through many phases: resort, villa colony, residential neighborhood, diplomatic quarter, center of military organization, Nazi government address, expanse of rubble, urban wasteland, prospective site for a culture forum. The book is divided into chapters on “Approaches,” “History,” “Militaria,” “Culture,” and “From ruins to the Kulturforum.” With many historical documents, photographs, street maps, postcards, letters, and other writings, the authors act as detectives and architectural historians, as well as performing memory work.
