To kick off the European Citizens’ Initiative HouseEurope!, Architects for Future conceived and designed the exhibition FIX IT! – REBUILDING INSTEAD OF DEMOLITION. As a pop-up exhibition, FIX IT! will travel throughout all German states for a year, promoting the current discourse on renovation and democratic education. 16 successful examples from the BDA’s Redevelopment Atlas demonstrate the diversity of small and large renovation projects throughout Germany and highlight the need to avoid demolition in our cities and villages. Local examples and regional specifics in renovation practice will complement and expand the exhibition throughout its run. HouseEurope! is seeking 1,000,000 supporters from at least seven EU countries across Europe by January 31, 2026. Signatures will be collected at all exhibition locations and online at HouseEurope.de.
Starting in April 2025, excerpts from FIX IT! will complement the exhibition THE DEMOLITION QUESTION & POWER TO RENOVATION at DAZ Berlin. In June, FIX IT! will move to Architektur Galerie Berlin as part of the exhibition THE CONSTRUCTION TURN IS FEMALE, presented by Architects for Future as part of the Women in Architecture Festival 2025. Additional locations are planned and can be requested at any time: event@architects4future.de
The exhibition was organized by Architects for Future (A4F) for HouseEurope!, supported by the Association of German Architects (BDA), and made possible by the Allianz Foundation. HouseEurope! is a European Citizens’ Initiative for new EU laws that make renovations and conversions easier, cheaper, and more socially responsible. HE! calls for a right to reuse for existing buildings, based on three pillars:
(I) Tax relief for renovations and reused materials
(II) Fair rules for assessing the risks and potential of existing buildings
(III) New values for the CO2 stored in existing buildings („grey energy“)
(IV) Financial support
