KREISE ZIEHEN [GOING OUT OF CIRCLES] - Part 1
»Zeitkapsel Hasenbergl« by Pia Lanzinger
»Aspectomat Hellersdorf« by Barbara and Thomas Klage
In the first part of the exhibition, a documentation on the two-year project »Zeitkapsel Hasenbergl« by the artist Pia Lanzinger and photographs and videos by the Hellersdorf residents Barbara and Thomas Klage will be shown. During her research on the history of the Hasenbergl housing estate on the outskirts of Munich, Pia Lanzinger found out that the foundation stone of the estate, including a time capsule installed inside it, had been lost during building work. The project ‘Zeitkapsel Hasenbergl’ grasps this ›deficit‹ as an opportunity. The visions of the future from the time when the estate was founded have not been fulfilled. The Hasenbergl has evolved in its own strong-willed way. Its image of itself was captured in 2017 through the relaying of the foundation stone: 70 residents each contributed a personal experience from Hasenbergl in a video clip for the new time capsule. With their broad participation, the residents create an alternative picture of life on this large housing estate on the outskirts of Munich.
Barbara and Thomas Klage were among the first residents who moved to Hellersdorf in 1988. Their extensive photo archive is now being digitised for the show. A selection of narrated stories and documents of everyday life will be presented publicly, beyond the private framework of the family album. Here, the city is not only built space but always also a place where people live their lives and follow their own desire and imagination. What was the ›wellington boot time‹ in Hellersdorf like, when the first residents took on responsibilities for their new estate? What changes and shifts in the systems of values have the residents experienced and how did they document them?

»Berliner Hefte zu Geschichte und Gegenwart der Stadt #6 - Zingster Straße 25« by Sonya Schönberger
To address the urgent need for living space, the GDR government began to focus on industrial construction based on prefabricated concrete slabs, the so-called Plattenbau, in the mid-1950s. New housing areas were erected on the outskirts of the cities; modern amenities made these apartments quite popular. One of the last large developments to be built in East Berlin was Neu-Hohenschönhausen, with Erich Honecker himself laying the foundation stone in February 1984. Many of the apartment buildings were ready for their new tenants as early as 1987—the high-rise at Zingster Straße 25 counted among these. Three decades later, the artist Sonya Schönberger inquired what had become of the buildings’ original tenants. Who still lives there? Who has since moved in? Based on interviews, the stories in this book offer a glimpse into different everyday realities, interconnected through the outer shell of the Platte. They tell, in a very personal way, of daily life in the GDR, of the change of the political systems, and of the present day in reunified Germany. The actor Florian Anderer will read excerts from the publication.
