Berlin is a magnet for people and investment. Population is expanding, real estate value is rising, residents are being displaced. Many Berliners have to or want to move “outside”.
“What is outside?“ deals with questions of social urban development, contexts citywide and the theme of being “outside”. The station urbaner kulturen near Kaulsdorf-Nord underground station is a place for production, an address and a meeting point.

PROJEKTS 2015
AG Hellersdorfer Illustrierte »Hellersdorf Wallpaper«
In collaboration with residents and local institutions, experiences, everyday practices, social networks, economic developments and political processes are discussed and processed into a wall newspaper and wallpaper.Permanent installation at the subway stations on line U5 between Neue Grottkauer Str. and Hönow.
Roland Boden »New Hell City_Smart Mining for prosperity and jobs«
The research in “New Hell City” deals with the life of the Berlin local historian and geographer Dr. Emil Ranzenbiehler and his geological discoveries in the area of today’s Hellersdorf district. www.newhellcity.dePermanent installation in the Kaulsdorf-Nord subway station
Andreas Maria Fohr »Travelling E – a camera movement«
The short film is about the city as a place of life and thought and its outside. Shots taken along the U5 are juxtaposed with images from other sources and contexts. This image montage does not show the outside frontally, but opens it up in new directions via detours.
Ulrike Gärtner and Carsten Ludwig »Youth - On Air«
..builds on the project „Teletreff U5“ (2014). The young people investigate what distinguishes their current experience from utopias from the GDR era or what connects them with them: Are the former residents Heiner Müller, the dramatist of social collapse, and Professor Heinrich Dathe, behavioral researcher and founder of the Berlin Tierpark, whose „Tierparkteletreff“ was one of the most popular animal programs on GDR television for decades, still relevant? On this basis, a short film will be shot in 2014 and live performances in the style of matinee/entertainment/potpourri and Teletreff broadcasts will be held in the Tierpark underground station in 2015.
Christina M. Heinen »Inside OutsideRadio«
…a radio show that will be recorded in Hellersdorf from April 2015 and can be listened to online. An original trick is the local location of the „recording studio“ in the participatory underground of Hellersdorf: The BVG departure building on the platform of the Hellersdorf subway station (U5) becomes a temporary broadcasting facility. The studio exists in a hideout and thus also does justice to the subcultural representation of an underground broadcaster. The stories and opinions that the Hellersdorf residents tell as part of a radio show give the little house a double life. www.insideoutsideradio.org
ari Keski-Korsu »The place is outside: MEGA«
Cartographers have mistakenly labeled a place near Ahrensfelde as “MEGA” on a city map. The place is located in the Eiche district, north of Berlin-Hellersdorf. Two open workshops taking place there are looking at how a place gets an identity and how people create landscapes. Together, they plan to design and build a permanent work of art in public space, which will then be maintained by the municipality of Eiche.
Mirko Winkel »Hellersdorf Walkout«
Parcours in public space: In a process lasting several weeks, a physical training program is developed together with a pioneering group of Hellersdorf residents, an exercise routine whose movements are derived from the specific conditions on site. This site-specific style is then handed over to the district and its residents. Together with Martin Schick, Mirko Winkel and the group develop a signposted training course over the obstacles of the city, for everyone to join in. Permanent installation on and around Cecilienplatz
Ina Wudtke »Who was Albert Norden?«
From 1984 to 1992, the Kaulsdorf-Nord subway station was called „Albert-Norden-Straße“. Today’s Cecilienstraße and Cecilienplatz also bore the name of Albert Norden during this period.Who was Albert Norden? 22 years after the renaming, the artist curator Ina Wudtke, together with artists she invited, will now lead the discussion about whether it was right to erase Albert Norden’s name from the collective consciousness. Permanent installation in the Kaulsdorf-Nord subway station
