From a total of 105 entries to the open, international art competition »Art in the Underground 2022/23: new urban publics«, a nine-member prize jury has selected (in an anonymized procedure) six proposals that deal with current changes in social practice.

The works, visible in public from June through August 2023, link Berlin’s underground with urban spaces above ground, as well as featuring on in-train info screens throughout the network. Like the 2020/21 edition of the competition, »Art in the Underground 2022/23: new urban publics« will focus on the qualities, limits, and potential of urban space, exploring it via a range of artworks. This time, taking its cue from the association of public squares with the common good, as a place to meet and talk, three Berlin locations and their underground stations serve as the settings for artistic interventions: Kottbusser Tor, Strausberger Platz and Rotes Rathaus. All three are architecturally striking, as well as being cut across by streets or spanned by an elevated railway. These urban spaces have different usages: traffic, shopping, communication, relaxation. The selected works seek to amplify and highlight these usages, making each site into a protagonist—as sites, occasions, and objects of alternative political self-organization.

Irene Fernandez Arcas is interested in the healing potential of art; focusing on the neoliberal exploitation of self-care, body, and mind, her work examines the desire to achieve intimacy and make connections in urban settings. A digital project by the collective image-shift from Sandy Kaltenborn, Athena Javanmardi, and Paco Camberlin counters the oversimplified media image of Kottbusser Tor as a problem zone with a view of its many-layered social fabric. Julieta Ortiz de Latierro’s three-part project consists of a photographic intervention at Kottbusser Tor subway station, a one-day workshop in a nearby park, and a video produced as part of Art in the Underground and shown on in-train info screens throughout Berlin’s public transport network. In Sunny Pfalzer’s durational performance at Strausberger Platz, three performers explore the tensions between gender diversity and the binary gaze with which queer bodies are confronted in public space. With Chargé, Sinzo Aanza, Jasmina Al-Qaisi, Falonne Mambu, Nada Tshibwabwa, Ralf Wendt, and Elsa Westreicher, six artists from Germany and the Democratic Republic of Congo, come to Strausberger Platz with performances, literature, sound works, and graphics that criticize exploitation and consumerism. In a wrestling performance in front of the Rotes Rathaus, Liminal Beast of Prey bring together education and entertainment; embedded in an urban science-fiction story, the show presents characters metaphorically fighting battles that otherwise often remain invisible.

- The documentary Gurbet artık bir ev / Gurbet is a home (2021;63 min.) by Pınar Öğrenci reflects on the urban planning concept of „cautious urban renewal“ and addresses the discriminatory treatment of migrant workers. The film reveals an aspect of Kreuzberg’s planning history that has received little attention to date: that of migrant women and guest workers.
- Miete Essen Seele Auf by Angelika Levi (2015; 54 min.) documents two years of neighborhood organizing and protest at the southern Kottbusser Tor. The housing issue is linked to the history of migration and a connection between racism and urban displacement is emphasized.

Soundarbeit „Chargé“, 2023 Von Sinzo Aanza, Jasmina Al-Qaisi, Ralf Wendt, Fallonne Mambu, Elsa Westreicher, Nada Tshibwabwa und der nGbK Berlin Eine dreisprachige Soundarbeit, die in Berlin durch einen Anruf erreicht und angehört werden konnte. Eine auf den Plakaten der Hintergleisflächen des U-Bahnhofs abgebildete Telefonnummer führte Passant_innen zu einer Telefonwarteschleife, welche die Soundarbeit wiederholt abspielte. Die Arbeit basiert auf dem Roman Généalogie d’une banalité des kongolesischen Autors Sinzo Aanza, der die Welt einer Gemeinschaft in Lubumbashi, der Hauptstadt der rohstoffreichen Region Haut-Katanga, beschreibt. Die Bewohner_innen der sogenannten „Bronx“ beginnen, im Boden ihrer Grundstücke zu graben, in der Hoffnung, Kupfer zu finden. Die Soundarbeit kombiniert die Realitäten des Strausberger Platzes mit den Realitäten des Abbaus von Metallen im Kongo und dem Rauschen herumfliegender Datenpakete auditiv und neu verbindet sie neu. Gleichzeitig werden so Fragmente aus Sinzo Aanzas Buch erstmalig ins Englische und Deutsche übersetzt – bisher erschien es lediglich auf Französisch. Sinzo Aanza ( 1990, Goma, DR Kongo) lebt und arbeitet in Kinshasa, DR Kongo. Als Künstler, Dramatiker und Autor veröffentlichte er mehrere Texte und Kurzgeschichten in verschiedenen Magazinen wie Gierik & NVT, Belgien oder The Chimurenga Chronic, Südafrika, bevor er 2015 seinen ersten Roman Généalogie d’une banalité (Genealogie einer Banalität) veröffentlichte. 2017, während einer Künstlerresidenz im WIELS, Zentrum für zeitgenössische Kunst, Brüssel, begann Sinzo Aanza mit der Installation Projet d’attentat contre l’image? (Geplantes Attentat gegen das Bild). Er veröffentlichte Theaterstücke, darunter Histoire générale des murs (Allgemeine Geschichte der Mauern) und Le jour du massacre (Der Tag des Massakers), die in Kinshasa aufgeführt wurden. Jasmina Al-Qaisi ist eine Autorin, die oft in freien, unabhängigen, temporären, mobilen und öffentlichen Radios Wellen schlägt. Manchmal tritt Al-Qaisi in einer anderen Form auf: als wandelnde Wissen­schaftlerin, als Vogelbeobachter_innenbeobachterin, als schnelle musikalische Hilfe, als selbstberechtigtes Büro für Selbstberechtigung oder als emotionale Technikerin. Al-Qaisi ist seit 2017 auf vielfältige Weise künstlerisch tätig: Sie entwickelt Konzepte, schreibt, kocht, denkt und spricht über verschiedene Formen des Zusammenseins in anderer Form. Als Kunstschriftstellerin nutzt sie poetische und alternative Formen, um Kritik zu üben und gemeinsam mit anderen Geschichten zu erzählen. Gemeinsam mit dem Künstler Ralf Wendt entwickelte sie diverse Audioaktionen. Fallonne Mambu ( 1991, Matadi, DR Kongo) ist eine multidisziplinäre Künstlerin, die Fragen der Weiblichkeit, der Gewalt gegen Frauen und des feministischen Aktivismus thematisiert, indem sie den Körper und dessen Erkenntnisse und Erfahrungen sowie Resilienz und Widerstand in den Mittelpunkt stellt. Mambu studierte an der Académie des Beaux-Arts Kinshasa. Ihre Arbeiten wurden am Institut Français (Kinshasa, 2022; Goma, 2021; Bukavu, 2021); Galerie Saga (Lille, Frankreich, 2021), Musée de l’Échangeur (Kinshasa, DR Kongo, 2019), Exposition Centre Culturel Boboto (Kinshasa, DR Kongo, 2019), Centre Wallonie-Bruxelles (Kinshasa, DR Kongo, 2019) gezeigt. Sie war Artist in Residence im Kin Art Studio (Kinshasa, DR Kongo 2018), beim Festival de la Rue d’Assinie (Assouindé, Elfenbeinküste, 2018) und bei Ndaku Ya La Vie est Belle (2010). Nada Tshibwabwa ( 1990, Lubumbashi, DR Kongo) ist ein multidisziplinärer Künstler und Musiker. In seiner Praxis beschäftigt er sich mit der Gewalt, die zeitgenössischen Machtverhältnissen innewohnt. Er thematisiert unter anderem wie Umweltfragen mit seiner eigenen Biografie verstrickt sind und versucht, Gegennarrative zu schaffen. Seine musikalische Karriere umfasst Kollaborationen wie das Duo Sinda Nada (2008–), das Kollektiv Timbela Batimbela Yo, Lexxus Legal usw. Während seine Musik immer enger mit den visuellen Künsten verbunden ist, beteiligte er sich am Faire-Part-Projekt (2016), KINACT-Rencontres Internationales des Performeurs (seit 2016), bis er 2020 auf dem Plateau Bateke, außerhalb von Kinshasa, einen Treffpunkt schuf, um Umweltfragen auf kreative Weise anzugehen. Im Jahr 2022 gründete er das Studio Mwano. Er war u.a. an folgenden Ausstellungen beteiligt: Megalopolis: Voices from Kinshasa (2018/19, GRASSI Museum, Leipzig), The Long Term you Cannot Afford. On the Distribution of the Toxic (2019, S A V V Y Contemporary, Berlin), Fulu-Act : Du Mouvement, Naît Le Regard (2021, BOZAR, Brüssel), Müll (2022, Kunstverein Leipzig). Zwischen 2018 und 2022 war Nada Tshibwabwa Teil des Kunstraums Ndaku Ya La Vie Est Belle; 2022 war er Artist in Residence im Musée Royal de l’Afrique Centrale in Tervuren, Belgien. Ralf Wendt arbeitet in den zeitbasierten und literarischen Künsten an der Dekon­struktion menschlicher sowie tierischer Sprache und hinterfragt die Ordnung der Dinge. Seit Mitte der 1990er-Jahre the­matisiert er in Performances, Filmen und Radiokunst eine Poetik der Suprasegmentalia, oft mit der Gruppe Wolf In The Winter. Die Verbindung von Performancekunst mit dem Medium Radio führte Wendt aus den Galerien und Festivals ins freie Radio. Wendt bringt verschiedene künstlerische Ausdrucksformen zusammen, die sich für utopische/dystopische gesell­schaftliche Störungen interessieren. Er gibt seine Erfahrungen als Pädagoge in verschiedenen Universitäten, Kunst­schulen und Medienbildungszentren weiter. Elsa Westreicher ( 1989, Kinshasa, DR Kongo) lebt und arbeitet als freie Grafikdesignerin in Berlin und Kinshasa. Sie studierte am Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design und an der New School for Social Research mit einem DAAD-Stipendium. Von 2014 bis 2020 war sie ein aktiver Teil von S A V V Y Contemporary – The Laboratory of Form-Ideas, wo sie eine Designabteilung initiierte und das Projekt Spinning Triangles: Ignition of a School of Design (2019) leitete. 2020/21 erarbeitete sie mit Orakle Ngoy die Projekte SPAM: A Radio Program of Undesired-Desired Messages und Tango: On the (Dis-)Integration of Times. Derzeit vertieft sie ihre Forschung zu Fragen der Kolonialität in Designpraktiken. Außerhalb ihrer forschenden und kuratorischen Arbeit entwickelt sie Kommunikationsstrategien und/oder Erscheinungsbilder; zu den jüngsten Kooperationspartnern gehören das ZKM Karlsruhe (2023), das Berliner Förderprogramm Künstlerische Forschung (2023), das Laboratoire Kontempo (2022), die Bauhaus Kooperation (2020) sowie die Lagos Biennale (2019).
