Houseplants are entangled in the colonial history of botanical gardens and the destruction of habitats, but also in privatized practices of life support. On the one hand, they are status symbols and fetishes, and on the other, they provide an opportunity to reflect on regenerative and caring activities for the preservation of ecosystems.

Based on a site-specific concept for the care and propagation of discarded potted plants, the PARA collective invited contemporary artists dedicated to the relationships between humans and plants. How does the well-being of plants reflect human behavior? How are encounters with plants influenced by (post-)colonial conditions? Does a rethinking of relationships with plants also lead to a relearning of human relationships with one another? The exhibition and event program addresses the conditions of vitality, the limits of caring resources, and constructions of nature and femininity. Video and spatial installations, sculptures, paintings, and textile works reveal the tension between protection and control inherent in plant conservation and question its transformative potential.
