The exhibition ›Trans_plantationen‹ focuses on the moment of transplantation as a multilayered border crossing between countries, social groups, genders, and identities. An installation by Anujah Fernando asks what memories remain in a fleeting place such as an asylum shelter when people have long ceased to live there. Through atmospheric images of cityscapes and close-ups, the two-channel installation ›Bacha Posch‹ by Yalda Afsah and Ginan Seidl tells the story of a 13-year-old Afghan girl growing up as a boy in Mazar-i-Sharif, who consciously assumes the duties and freedoms of her role. The collectively created installation ›Rhizom‹, directed by Juan Camilo Alfonso with residents of Hellersdorf, shows plant imprints of the disappearing green space ›Place Internationale‹ embroidered on paper and fabric.

FARAH (2022) is a film about adolescence; about the complexity of finding one’s place in a foreign context and making it a home. The documentary follows its teenage protagonist Farahnaz growing up, growing into and out of the various pre- or self-determined images of oneself. Having been raised as a boy according to the Afghan “Bacha Posh” tradition, Farahnaz self-confidently renegotiates the roles socially assigned to her – as an immigrant in Germany, as a girl in boys’ clothes, as a family member and as a friend.

Eco Print Workshop: Rooting and migration

How can we tell our own stories with plants? What can we learn from them about processes of migration and transformation?

The workshop approaches these questions using the eco-print technique. Leaves are printed on paper. The pigments are extracted to create a testimony to this moment and the conversations that arise.

The workshop is free of charge. All materials are included, and participants can take their own works home with them afterwards.

Letters from Kantstrasse 104a + Artist Talk with Anujah Fernando and guests

Based on the artistic work of Anujah Fernando, we will discuss the working conditions of migrants and their influence on migration decisions of different generations. Guests are Ram Paramanathan – creative producer, journalist, and former producer and host of the podcast „hellokekutho“ – and Rohit Arora – permaculture worker and member of the works council of Lieferando in Marzahn-Hellersdorf. Together, we will also address questions of belonging, queer identities, family, and connection.

The event is suitable for people who speak German, English, and/or Tamil.
