Gertraude Pohl is a visual artist and designer. She studied at the Weißensee Academy of Art and is one of the few female artists who played a key role in shaping the aesthetics of public art in the GDR. Her most significant projects included the collective development of the color and material concept for the Palace of the Republic and her design for its natural stone floor in the main foyer, the wall design for the VEB Stern-Radio factory in Berlin-Marzahn, and numerous murals for “Kinderkombination” children’s centers and public buildings. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, she addressed the disappearance and destruction of GDR art in public spaces.
