What’s Next for Artistic Research?

Fri, 16.1.26, 6.00 pm Type: Roundtable, Book presentation Languages: German Location: nGbK Address: Karl-Liebknecht-Straße 11, 10178 Berlin, 1st floor Admission: free

Several decisions are pending regarding the institutional development and promotion of artistic research in Berlin, both in political and aesthetic terms. One of these is the recent decision by the Berlin Senate to discontinue the Berlin Artistic Research Programme, and another is the upcoming establishment of a joint doctoral program by the four Berlin art academies. These political decisions are linked to the question of the institutional location and the further development of artistic research in terms of content and aesthetics. The latter is addressed in the volume Permeationen – Durchdringungen zwischen künstlerischer Forschung und ästhetischer Theorie, published by Spector Books in 2025. It revisits the old question of collaboration between theory and practice and sees itself as a blueprint for new coalitions between critical knowledge formation and artistic research. The event aims to combine the book presentation with a discussion about artistic research inside and outside art academies and to open up the question of the different constellations of research-based art in relation to theory and science.
