Since July 2025, artist Nejbir Erkol has been living and working at Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien as a Istanbul-Berlin resident. During her open studio, she presents works in progress produced during her residency. In the artist talk, she speaks about her production process, introducing and drawing connections with her previous bodies of work.

Nejbir Erkol’s artistic practice, which encompasses video, installation, painting, and performance, addresses issues such as insecurity, migration, identity, and collective memory. Born in the Nusaybin district of Mardin, located in southeastern Turkey, approximately 20 km north of the Syrian border and close to Iraq, the artist’s projects often draw on her own experiences of political violence and displacement to create spaces for reflection on how communities remember, reconstruct, and narrate their histories. During her residency, she communicates with similarly displaced people, particularly those who fled from the Syrian-Turkish border, and explores what it means to start a “second life” in Germany. Her aim is to document these experiences and to experiment with how stories can be told uncensored and shared, if they are not suppressed and criminalized.
