We all look at the same thing and arrive at different conclusions. Take the word “disabled” for example – it is both an insult and an official category. From what point, and for what reasons, something constitutes a disability is a matter of perspective. Am I disabled – or am I being disabled? The worlds we live in often barely touch.

For more than 30 years, Kunstwerkstatt Kreuzberg – out of which the “Matters of Perspective” work group has formed – has worked collectively in the field of art. Its concern is to strip art of its exclusivity, to break open categories, and to question interpretive authority. This exhibition and publication are an invitation to discover creativity, to question what we see, and to engage with people. Whether we succeed – that, too, is a matter of perspective.

The publication includes an introduction by David Permantier; interviews with the participating artists, in which they introduce themselves and their concept of art; and essays by Kate Brehme regarding the relationship between art and inclusion, and by Uta George regarding the topic of inclusive commemoration in the context of Nazi-era crimes.
