Avante Portugal!

Year: 1976 Type: Print publication Languages: German Format: Newspaper and poster in color Cooperation: Elefanten Press Galerie

The publication accompanying the exhibition Avante Portugal!, that was split between “Murals” at the nGbK and “Posters, caricature, photography, flyers” at the Elefanten-Press-Galerie, took the form of a newspaper. The political struggle and artistic practice of Portugal’s exploited population after the toppling of the fascist regime in 1974 is presented under the motto “A luta continua!” The show highlights the way art became part of a revolutionary culture and how culture became a dynamizing factor in the revolutionary process. As well as containing texts on specific subjects, the newspaper acted as a flyer announcing film screenings and discussion events—as well as appealing for donations. In addition to photographs, posters, and murals, there is a chronology of twentieth-century Portuguese history and a centerfold color poster featuring an excerpt from a mural by an artists’ collective in Évora.
