Icarus – myth as realism in examples from contemporary art
The 33rd RealismusStudio exhibition explores the ongoing validity of mythical images that continue to assert themselves both in art and in literature and everyday consciousness. According to the introduction: “This discussion takes its cue from two questions: What is the role of the mythical motif of Icarus in critical-realistic art, where it has resurfaced since the beginning of the 1970s? In the art of the 1980s, do references to myths still represent a reference to reality (outside of art)?” The catalogue contains texts by Barbara Straka, Freya Mülhaupt, Ingrid Wagner-Kantuser, and Frank Wagner, an excerpt from Ovid’s Metamorphoses, and reproductions of works by artists including Günther Förg, Jürgen Klauke, Maren Krusche, Panamarenko, and Barbara Quandt.
