Palästina zwischen Augen: The Return of the Palestinian Question and the End of the Human Rights Discourse
Lecture by Sami Khatib. Moderated by Joshua Schwebel
Sami Khatib will present a lecture based on his 2024 article titled Against singularity, Palestine as symptom and cause. In it, he discusses one of the foundational fantasies that shapes anti-Palestinian racism in Germany: the state that claims to speak in the name of those murdered in Germany’s name cannot itself be a state of injustice. From the perspective of German Staatsräson, the unconditional support of the state of Israel proves Germany’s success in moral redemption and material reparation for the Holocaust. Khatib argues that Palestine is a breaking point of both contemporary German ideology and Western imperialism. The Palestinian struggle cannot be translated into the depoliticizing language of the human rights discourse. An answer to the Palestinian question thus necessitates a change of this entire order.
